Here, Jamaica Plain, MA teacher Noaa R.  shares four steps to get you started Many students tend to avoid studying music theory and harmony. This can stem from a fear of compromising one’s creativity with rules and numbers, a failure to connect concepts with application, or from feeling overwhelmed by the perceived volume of material to be learned. However, when you approach theory as an exploratory process that helps you grow, navigate your musical world, make creative choices faster, train your ears, and generate new ideas, it’s a total blast. Here are four steps to changing your perspective as you learn music theory. 1) Realize Why You’re Studying Theory The Circle of Fifths, triads, intervals, modes with Greek names, and complicated sounding chords like C7(b9b13) can seem like a pointless jumble of terms and stock patterns to memorize but the facts are: Music theory is tools it evolved as a way to explain, organize, and codify the felt experience of music. All these names correspond to textures or sonic events which have special relationships to each other and provide you with a set of devices to be recognized in listening and used judiciously in composition and improvisation, just like rhetorical devices in writing or speech. When you understand what they are, what they sound like, and recognize the names for them, they’re at your disposal. You are thus freer to make music as opposed to groping blindly in the dark. Yes, you’re studying patterns and devices that other people have used before. This means nothing â€" you will find your own voice regardless, using the same means to your own musical end. You didn’t invent a new language when you learned to speak, yet you express yourself fluently and uniquely using the same words, phrases, and syntax as other English speakers. 2) Get Curious Make music theory a joyful exploration of new sounds. When you learn a new chord, scale, or progression, treat it like a strange and wonderful animal you are encountering for the first time. This isn’t much of a stretch â€" say you are learning about minor 7th, major 7th, and dominant 7th chords. Play them on your instrument. What colors do they have? How do they differ? How do they make you feel? What is difference in the structure of these chord qualities that makes them so distinct? Do they remind you of sounds you’ve heard before? Form a unique relationship with every sound through immersion and play and I mean literal play. Mess around with these new musical building blocks. Create little grooves and ideas, and maybe you’ll even write a song. The goal is to create an experience connected with the concept that is the key to retaining information, not rote memorization. 3) Make it Real Bring concepts out of the intellectual ether into experiential reality immediately. The seven diatonic triads of the major scale should never be left as dots on a page. It’s important to be able to write and spell them, so that you can visualize and understand them. But they aren’t a math problem â€" they are seven textures relating to a tonal center with distinct relationships and near-infinite possibilities for creative combination. Not only that, the vast majority of popular western music uses just these seven chords. Learn the triads on your instrument, then find them on another instrument (piano is a great tool for learning in this regard by virtue of its intuitive and linear organization). Sing them as well â€" often it takes changes of context and approach for something to sink in. Mix and match different triads, one per measure, to create a four-bar progression. What sounded good? What didn’t? What grabbed your ear? Try writing a melody over it. Ask your teacher to help you analyze a tune you’ve always loved and compare it to your progression â€" you’ll be thrilled to recognize familiar patterns after a few of these analyses. 4) Stop Worrying Music is vast. There’s a lot to memorize and keep track of. Understand that you can only process a certain amount at once, so work with bite-size chunks. Patiently trust the process, and you will find concepts become second nature over time. Keep in mind that you need only learn music theory as much as serves the fulfillment of your goals whether you’re a singer-songwriter just looking to spice up the same old progressions or you’re interested in jazz improvisation. Find what’s relevant to you and don’t worry about the rest. Theory only exists as an organized way for us to explore what is available, and to understand deeper what we’re already familiar with so that we can use it more intelligently and artistically. Energy is obtained by breaking down carbon based molecules in the process of respiration. Oxidation-reduction reactions are common chemical reactions involved in respiratory breakdown of molecules. Most organisms use oxygen obtained from outside for the process of respiration. Human respiratory system consists of respiratory tract-nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and the lungs. The nose is the part of entry for the atmospheric air. Externally it bears two nostrils represented by a cartilaginous septum and internally it opens in to a pair of nasal chambers. Thehair lining the nostrils traps the entry of dust or any other large foreign particles into the system. Themucustrap the harmful organisms. Pharynx is a common passage at the back of the mouth for air and food. Air enters the front tube called the trachea or wind pipe while food enters the hind tube called the esophagus. The opening of the wind pipe is guarded by a muscular flap called the epiglottis. Larynx is located at the start of the trachea is a hollow cartilaginous structure called the voice box. It is more prominent visible in males at the front of the neck and is popularly called the Adams apple. Itconsist of two muscular folds called vocal cords. Vibrations in these cords produce sounds. The trachea divides in the thoracic cavity into two bronchi-the left and right, which enter each lung and branch extensively into the bronchial tree. The smallest bronchial branches are called bronchioles. The bronchioles end in blind air sacs as alveoli. The clusters of alveoli form the lung tissue. Both lungs contain 300 to 400 microscopic alveoli which in a normal adult have a diameter of 0.2mm. Incomplete rings of cartilage keep the trachea and bronchi distended and prevent their collapsing when the pressure inside them falls during inspiration. The cartilaginous rings also strengthen the walls of the trachea and bronchi. Bronchioles are without any cartilage.

Take a practice test Did you complete a diagnostic exam when you first started reviewing for the GMAT? Consider sitting for a new GMAT practice test now. Determine your comfort with the exam material, as well as what you must focus on next. Familiarize yourself with the length of the test (including its breaks) and with the different types of questions in each section. Taking the GMAT requires endurance and academic skill. If possible, complete an official computer-based exam via GMAC. This will provide you with the most accurate simulation of the test day experience. 2. Determine your current strengths and weaknesses You may have started your prep routine as a Quantitative expert, but perhaps Data Sufficiency has begun to give you pause. Conversely, you may have believed that Verbal questions were your forte, but now you fight your way through Critical Reasoning problems. Again, examine where you are today. Begin with your strengths. How much money can you make teaching English in Thailand While money isn’t everything when it comes to teaching in Thailand, it is key to helping you fund your travels and a better lifestyle...as well as saving up money or paying off debt (if those happen to be your financial goals!) So it’s no surprise that English teaching salaries in Thailand continue to be a hot topic for teach abroad hopefuls everywhere. That’s why, this week on the blog, we’re looking at Thailand teaching jobs and the kind of salaries you can expect, depending on your own experience and qualifications. With the help of our teach abroad salary calculator and our data from ESL teaching job postings, let’s take a look at what you can expect to earn as an English teacher in Thailand: How much do ESL teachers make in Thailand? We should probably get the bad news out of the way first: the average English teacher salary in Thailand is not as high as other ESL teaching hotspots in Asia, like China, Japan or Korea. Most inexperienced teachers with a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certification can expect to earn around $1,000 - 1,200 USD a month teaching English at a public school in Thailand, which is just about enough to cover your daily living costs. If you’re an experienced ESL teacher, your pay will be bumped up to about $1,700 - 2,000 to reflect this - especially if you can land a job teaching English at a private ESL language school in Thailand. This is in exchange for about 25 teaching hours a week - not bad at all! You will need to be somewhat flexible with your working schedule as odd hours (evenings and weekends) are the norm. Extra benefits could include free housing, a one-way flight and a contract-completion bonus (usually the equivalent of one month’s teaching salary). You have to ensure you make time for everything without sacrificing your physical and mental health, so be certain to plan your schedule ahead of time. This might include scheduling down time in addition to your internship and classes, so you will definitely have time to relax around your busy schedule. Balance your internship with your studies What you take in school is important not just for satisfying course requirements, but for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Since internships can run the gamut from relaxing to demanding, pair the classes you take with the rigors of your work. If you’re internship involves a lot of busy work, you’re probably better off taking less intense classes on the days you’ll be interning. Supplement your internship with classes Most students apply for internships without having much knowledge of the field they’re trying to gain experience in; in fact, that’s often why some students apply for internships in the first place. Just because you’re going into something unfamiliar doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to do your homework literally: Consider taking classes that will increase your knowledge of the field you’re interning in. For example, if you’re interning at a law office, a political science or even a philosophy course might give you some valuable insight into the field.
